Is 7 hours of sleep enough?
Updated October 3, 2026 · Sources: NSF panel 2015 · AASM 2016/2015 · CDC
Short answer (adults)
Yes
Yes for most adults. The adult range is 7–9 hours; 7 hours is 5 sleep cycles of 90 minutes.
General information from population studies (NIH, CDC, NSF, AASM). It is not medical advice and does not replace a clinician who knows you.
7 hours is inside the 7–9 hours the National Sleep Foundation panel recommends for adults aged 26–64, and clears the "7 or more" line from the AASM and Sleep Research Society. Whether it is enough depends on age: it is within the recommended range for young adults, adults, older adults; it may be appropriate for some school-age childs, teenagers; and it is not recommended for newborns, infants, toddlers, preschoolers.
Across the nine age groups, 7 hours is recommended for 3, may be appropriate for 2 and not recommended for 4. For an adult it is the floor of the range: 5 full cycles with 60 minutes to spare.

What 7 hours means in cycles
At the 90-minute average, 7 hours is about 5 cycles (7 h 30 min). Five to six cycles is where most adults land on an ordinary good night, with REM concentrated in the last two. See 5 cycles in detail →
One night versus every night
Both consensus statements are about a regular pattern. A single 7-hour night is simply a normal night. If you are choosing a bedtime for tomorrow, the bedtime pages turn your alarm time into a cycle-aligned lights-out.
