What time should I wake up if I go to bed at 12:00 am?

From a 12:00 am bedtime, five cycles end at 7:45 am. If the alarm has to be earlier than that, you are choosing between 6:15 am and a short night.

Why these alarm times

Setting the alarm for 7:45 am gives 7 h 30 min of sleep after the usual fifteen minutes to drift off — inside the 7–9 hours recommended for adults. 9:15 am adds a sixth cycle (9 h). The earliest option, 6:15 am, is four cycles and 6 h — a one-night floor, not a routine.

Waking at the end of a cycle usually means waking from light sleep or REM rather than deep sleep, which is why an alarm that lands here feels gentler than one that lands twenty minutes earlier. Cycles vary from 70 to 120 minutes, so each time is the centre of a window.

Walk through the night from a 12:00 am lights-out: asleep by about 12:15 am, into the first stretch of deep sleep around 12:35 am, first REM period near 1:30 am, the halfway point of the night at 4:00 am, and the longest REM period of the night starting around 7:10 am — which is what a 7:45 am alarm at the end of cycle 5 lets you finish.
