Caffeine cutoff for a 12:30 am bedtime: when to have your last coffee
Updated October 3, 2026 · Sources: Drake 2013 · FDA · IOM 2001 · USDA
Short answer
6:30 pm
is six hours before a 12:30 am bedtime — the latest point the trial evidence supports for a full-strength coffee.
General information from population studies (NIH, CDC, NSF, AASM). It is not medical advice and does not replace a clinician who knows you.
For a 12:30 am bedtime, six hours before is 6:30 pm. That is the cutoff from the only controlled trial that tested it: 400 mg of caffeine taken six hours before bed still shortened sleep by more than an hour, even though participants did not notice. A cup of brewed coffee (96 mg) at 6:30 pm leaves about 42 mg in your system at 12:30 am; the same cup at 9:30 pm leaves about 63 mg.
The 5-hour figure is a population average (the FDA cites 4 to 6 hours; the full range runs from about 1.5 to 9.5). If you are a slow metaboliser, move every time in the table earlier.

"Under 25 mg" is the illustrative line used across this site — roughly a quarter of a cup of coffee — not a clinical threshold. Each row shows when you would need to finish the drink for its caffeine to fall below that line by 12:30 am, at the average 5-hour half-life.
